The first double-blind study was done at the London Migraine Clinic, using patients who reported being helped by feverfew. 7 Seventeen patients who regularly ate fresh leaves of feverfew daily to prevent migraine were invited to participate in a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of the herb. Of these, eight patients received capsules containing freeze-dried feverfew powder and nine, a placebo. Those patients who received the placebo (and as a result stopped using feverfew) had a significant increase in the frequency and severity of headaches, nausea and vomiting during the six months of the study as well as the reemergence of untoward effects during the early months of treatment.
