Women’s career development: A study of high flyers. Oxford: Blackwell. 34 FIELDEN AND COOPER 3 MEN, MASCULINITY, AND HEALTH RONALD J. BURKE W h y do we need a chapter on men, masculinity, and health? Don’t we know enough about them? It is true that although most research on work and health has involved men, the experiences of men as men have been virtually ignored (Heam, 1994). In the 1970s and 1980s, attention was focused on women, spearheaded by scholars who called attention to the fact that increasing numbers of women were entering the workforce and women’s roles were changing (Powell, 1999).

This pain remained hidden until the emergence of feminism. As women began to identify and challenge men’s power and privilege, men felt under attack, vulnerable, confused, empty, and introspective. There are many virtues to be found in men’s masculinity: physical and emotional strength, sexual desire, the ability to operate under pressure, courage, creativity, intellect, self-sacrifice, and dedication to the task at hand (Kaufman, 1993). Although these qualities exist in all humans, many of them become distorted in men.

The imbalance resulting from mastery striving and intimacy avoidance has long-term costs. These include both difficulties in one’s personal life (family crises, distant relationships) as well as failures in management (anger, intimidation overcontrol, not asking for help, avoiding feedback), ultimately increasing stress levels and health care costs. Imbalances such as workaholism may affect entire families, with particular consequences for children (Burke, 2000). Career Success and Personal Failure Korman and Korman ( I 980) highlighted and elaborated on the career success and personal failure phenomenon.
