In this part of the process of finding the storyline, your job is to notice patterns. You will notice patterns of citations, then of themes, and then of specific issues. You will notice patterns of language usage, ways in which key terms are defined. You will notice patterns of professional controversies and institutional expertise. All of these findings will become personally and professionally important. Remember, trust the process. Approach your task as a cultural study. If you follow my advice, believe me: you will notice patterns in our culture.

Individuals whose work was regularly singled out for discussion achieved status, while students whose work was regularly overlooked lost status. Having status meant having a voice in discussions of other students' work. There were also the usual collegiate cliques based on differences in lifestyle choices, majors, and perceived levels of personal attractiveness. Collectively, these groups and hierarchies became identified with target audiences for our stories. Predictably, some members of a class would "love" some stories and deride others, usually based on their ability to identify (or not) with the main character and theme.

Make suggestions for future research. 48 Finding the Story in Ethnographic Words- It was obvious to me, as I am sure it is to most of you, that this form for expressing scholarship is very much like the standard format taught to students for making a problem-solving persuasive speech. Or, at least this is what we in the communication field endorse as a standard format for that assignment. It occurred to me that the most persuasive speeches I'd heard outside of a classroom were not delivered according to this standard formula.
