Chest waders are not needed, but hip waders are recommended for ease of mobility. During the summer months, it is possible to wet wade during the heat of the day. Boots should be felt-soled for positive footing on the slippery bottom. During high runoff years, the river can be dangerous from May to mid-June and it is wise to forego any attempts at wading.
