Dürfen wir es als eine tröstliche Fügung des Geschickes ansehen, dafs in den Zeiten unaufhaltsam fortschreitenden politischen Verfalls der alten Eidgenossenschaft die wissenschaftliche Bedeutung des Schweizerlandes auf einer unvergleichlichen Höhe stand — auf einer Höhe, die seither freilich auch nicht von ferne wieder erstiegen worden ist. Unser Jahrhundert ist durch Jakob Steiner vertreten, den Herrscher im Reiche der synthetischen Geometrie. Ich erblicke in der heutigen Versammlung Männer, die noch zu den Füfsen des Meisters safsen und es gehört auch zu meinen bedeutendsten persönlichen Erinnerungen, in den Zauberkreis des unvergefslichen Mannes getreten zu sein.

Indem ich fürs erste vollständig bei Seite lasse, was auf diesem Gebiete bis jetzt gearbeitet worden ist und noch gearbeitet wird, auch absichtlich vorläufig unerwähnt lasse, welche Institute sich gegenwärtig mit diesen Arbeiten beschäftigen, will ich nur kurz das Ziel charakterisieren, welches erstrebt werden mufs.
