He served as editor of the Psychological Bulletin from 1959 through 1964. In 1962, Helson won the Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award from the American Psychological Association. J. P. Guilford After completing his undergraduate degree in psychology at the University of Nebraska, J. P. Guilford was offered an assistantship at Cornell to study under Titchener.

After completing his dissertation and instructing at Illinois, in 1927 Guilford moved to the University of Kansas where he taught a course of abnormal and social psychology. The next year, Guilford accepted an offer from the University of Nebraska and taught there for 12 years. In 1935 and 1936, Guilford served as visiting professor at Northwestern, and had numerous interactions with L. L. Thurstone, Charles Spearman at Chicago, and Spearman’s assistant, Ledyard Tucker. In 1940, Guilford accepted a position at the University of Southern California, with a position free of administrative responsibilities, where he remained until his retirement in 1962.
