An early RNLI Atlantic 21 in rough seas An early Atlantic 21 now resting quietly in a transport museum OTHER PIONEERS – FLATACRAFT AND AVON The RNLI were not the only organisation looking at the RIB concept to develop a new class of boat. Flatacraft was one of the first to bring the idea to the leisure market. Tony Lee-Elliot is convinced that his brother Edward was already building his first RIB in the autumn of 1966, based on the design of a Tinker Tramp sailing inflatable the two of them had rented.

But while these prototype designs held together under the strain of operating in waves, the best solution for a rescue RIB design emerged slowly; the addition of a deep vee hull increased the draft of the boat, which required long shaft outboard engines. This deeper hull caused problems when launching it from an open beach, as the boat had to be taken into sufficient depth of water for the engine to be started. This led to the vee of the hull being truncated to take a few inches off the depth. The next stage was to modify the shape of the inflatable tube to create a longer, leaner and more sea-kindly hull shape.

The squared off bow tube created more space but could generate spray in a following sea A wheel-house RIB for offshore sports fishing A low-profile high-performance sports RIB on the Italian Lakes PROFESSIONAL RIBS There was a time when there was a distinct line between professional and leisure RIBs, but today the lines are blurring. However, the standards for professional RIBs still tend to be higher, particularly in some of the details, such as the electric wiring. Failure is not an option for these crafts, and not only do they put in a lot more hours than their leisure counterparts, but they tend to be used in more arduous work environments.
