One or more waypoints that you intend to pass through in a particular order is called a route or sail plan. Some of the simplest navigators demand that you enter the waypoints in the correct order, but most allow you to pick, choose and rearrange. This is particularly useful for racing boats whose (human) navigator can store the lat and long of all the local race marks in his (electronic) navigator’s memory at the start of the season, and quickly assemble the relevant ones into a route when the course is displayed at any time up to the five minute gun.

This involves taking the boat to an accuratelyknown position, then turning it round to point straight at each of several distant landmarks in turn. The true bearing of each mark can be found from the chart and converted to a magnetic bearing by applying variation. Comparing the known magnetic bearing with the corresponding compass heading gives the deviation. If the compass heading is less than the magnetic bearing the deviation is named east; if the compass bearing is the greater the deviation is named west.
