Despite her insecurities, Mollie was able to be free with him and her vulnerability was intoxicating. There was nothing he wouldn’t do for her.

He had given up his comfortable suburban life for a dingy four-floor walk-up in which he and Mollie were practically on top of each other. He knew Mollie dreamt of being in the city, so he made the move even though he couldn’t afford to replicate their suburban life (nor could he afford any of the luxuries Mollie wanted, like the ultra-exclusive health club membership). But she was willing to skimp on everything else, even clipping coupons for groceries just to have two things: an apartment in Manhattan and a membership to that health club.

He smiled and looked down sheepishly. As Paige started walking away, he again called after her. ” She shook her head in a self-deprecating way, wondering why she was telling him this. “Goodnight. Stay safe. I’ll look out the window and make sure you get off all right,” he hollered. She lifted up her arm and gave a backward wave as she entered the stairwell. As her driver opened the car door, she couldn’t resist. She tried to casually turn and look up but there was nothing casual about it.  She pretended not to notice, although the slightest smile crept across her face.
