Of the lateral meristems, it is the vascular cambium between phloem and xylem that is most often employed by horticulturists. Its normal function in the healthy woody or herbaceous dicotyledon is to produce new cells of phloem and xylem (see Chapter 3). If a cambium is wounded, it will normally regenerate and by influencing the developmental pathways of callus cells next to it, will assist in the healing process, so that cambial continuity is regained, and new cylinders of phloem and xylem established.

Glauca stock is employed. Water melon with wilt-prone roots can be grafted onto a gourd root stock that is Verticillicum wilt resistant. The sizes of fruit trees, particularly apples and pears, may be regulated by careful selection of root stock vigour. Trees of relatively fi xed mature size can be produced, and earlier fruiting induced. 25 (c) f Fig. 10 Chip bud graft. In the UK, the Malling Merton system provides trees with numbered rootstocks guaranteeing a mature tree with specific characteristics.

A) and (b) represent one group, (c) the other. All ×130. The phloem The primary phloem of monocotyledons and is described in Chapters 4–6. As with secondary xylem, secondary phloem has both axial and radial arrangements of cells. The same initials in the cambium which divide to form xylem to their inner side also cut off phloem cells to their outer side. Sometimes growth rings can be seen. 41 Ch 3 Xylem & phloem The structure of xylem and phloem the presence of tyloses makes woods particularly useful for liquid containers.
