Cut 20 clay stars with the star-shaped cookie cutter and 6 clay flowers with the flower-shaped cookie cutter. Gather the remaining clay scraps and roll the clay out again to ¼" (6mm) thickness. Cut the clay sheet into strips—these will be used to create the blue background tiles. 3 Finish clay tiles Let all of the clay pieces dry to leather hardness and use a wet sponge to smooth out any rough edges. Paint each tile with 2 to 3 basecoats of underglaze in the appropriate color. Use a squeeze bottle filled with the black underglaze to write “Art Is Life” in the banner, and to fill in the fine details on the other clay pieces.

Gloves are extremely important to use while grouting a mosaic. They protect your hands from staining, drying out and, most importantly, from being cut by sharp tesserae. I recommend surgical gloves or dishwashing gloves. Filter masks are another very important safety precaution. Always wear a filter mask when mixing grout and when cleaning grout off of a mosaic to prevent breathing in harmful dust particles. Painter’s tape is the best product I’ve found to protect different surfaces from paint or grout.

Allow the clay to cool completely. 8 Finish frame Pound 5 nails into each side of the frame, 2" (5cm) apart. Glue the polymer clay spheres onto the nails. Secure the mirror to the frame using silicone adhesive. Attach 2 screw eyes to the back of the piece, 2" (5cm) in from the top edge and 2" (5cm) in from the sides. Add wire to hang (see Preparing a Mosaic for Hanging). Wild Idea I left wider grout lines in this project with the intention of painting the grout. Although it is possible to create many different colors of grout by adding acrylic paint, this is the best way I have found to emulate a metallic grout.
