On the other hand, they also displayed a growing willingness to challenge local authorities and resist planned evictions (Kowalczuk, 1992: 245, 236; see Geist and Kürvers, 1980).
As Ring’s companion continued, I am pleased that on this occasion the world and imperial city shows itself in all its glory […] There is money everywhere and the stock market no longer knows what to do with it. Villas, houses, palaces, whole streets are growing like mushrooms out of the ground […] Meanwhile there are thousands in Berlin who are now homeless and without shelter because they can no longer afford the continually increasing rent as a result of these abnormal conditions. “It is the duty of the state, the city, society as a whole,” he concluded, “to [build] cheap workers' dwellings […] Since this has not been done, they have instinctively applied the principle of self-help (das Princip der Selbsthülfe) and thus embarked on their own” (Ring, 1872: 458).
These are spatial practices that, in my view, enlarge the ground of the political and how we, as geographers, document and attend to the city as a site of contestation and resistance, solidarity and experimentation. 13 This was a difficult decision to make but one based on a realisation that the often heated and partisan nature of those conversations risked opening old wounds and divisions whilst fostering renewed feelings of anger, betrayal and resentment. These are feelings that have already taken an enormous toll on individuals and the wider ‘scene’ and it seemed to me that other solidarities and connections were now urgently needed.
