If someone moves closer than is appropriate for the activity and relationship, we may become tense or even hostile, and this will affect the nature of the communication that is possible. However, here again there are cultural differences. Most North Americans and British prefer a certain distance for normal conversation. They feel more comfortable if that space between themselves and the other person is maintained. This can often cause problems for American or British business people visiting Latin countries, for example, where a smaller distance is preferred, or Japan where crowding together is often welcomed and not seen as an invasion of personal space.

This emphasises the difference between accent and diction. If you have a strong regional accent don't try to change it, but do make sure you open your mouth and use your lips flexibly to pronounce your words clearly.
