Turtledove wrote a ALTERNATIVE HISTORIES, CONTINGENT GEOGRAPHIES 25 series of novels (1992, 1997, 1998a) about the Civil War in which North and South continue to fight on and off into the twentieth century. Harrison (1998) pointed to an attack on the United States by Britain, struggling to insure a constant supply of cotton, which forces North and South to join against a common enemy.
Clark (1999: 158) notes that 'Without war, the jealousies, rivalries and diversities of the North American colonies would probably have produced only a much weaker association, if any'. Democracy — the peculiarly American version of the Enlightenment — would likely not have emerged through the Constitution and Bill of Rights. Deprived of the influence of the American experience, the French Revolution would also have been quite different. Alternative histories teach us how our own world came to be by illuminating ALTERNATIVE HISTORIES, CONTINGENT GEOGRAPHIES 37 how it did not become. Such a view tends to challenge the widespread tendency to take the past, and hence the present, for granted. After all, to understand who we are, we must also understand who we are not. Thus, alternative histories and geographies are wormholes into parallel universes in which we do not live, but might have. The study of 'plausible worlds' allows us to speculate creatively but realistically about alternative consequences to actions as they reverberate over time and space.
