Riemann, however, succeeded in explaining without contradiction the hypothesis of the obtuse angle, constructing an elliptical geometry in which no parallel line can be drawn through a point outside a straight line. These non-Euclidean geometries were of great importance in modern mathematics, but of more general epistemological interest is their rigorous notion of structure. Since, in Riemannian geometry, we cannot draw a parallel to a straight line, we have to accept the idea of a positively curved space such that angles A, B, and C add up to more than 180°: The less pronounced the curvature, the closer we come to Euclidean space.
Three episodes, apparently innocent and without logical connection to each other, were recalled in this way. First, the patient remembered the unaccustomed pleasure she experienced, during her stay, while taking frequent showers in the course of which she would let water flow over her body for a long time. She also recalled the inexplicable empathic connection she had felt with the woman instructor throughout the duration of the program. This was, of course, an unconscious identification manifesting itself as a well-known structural trait.
The operative nature of the structural model always presupposes that approaches of this sort have been undertaken, but for the most part it requires that they be bracketed or even renounced. It is only on this condition that a structural conception can reveal the hidden relationships among objects and among their elements. Provided that there is a degree of coherence in the objects under consideration—that they come under the same heading or belong to the same grouping—such relationships can emerge.
