The result is the birth of creativity, in which the infant believes in his capacity to create a reality that corresponds to his or her needs. The baby says (wordlessly of course): "I just feel like . . ," and just then the mother comes along and turns the baby over, or she comes with the feeding apparatus and the baby becomes able to finish the sentence: " . . a turn over, a breast, nipple, milk, etc. " We have to say that the baby created the breast, but could not have done so had not the mother come along with the breast just at that moment.

The difference is that Klein sees the selfishness of love as curing itself, transmuting itself into a genuine love and concern for the other, what she calls reparation. It is from the selfish love of the other that we learn to love the other unselfishly. I do not know that Klein is correct, and that Levinas is mistaken. No one has adequately explained the transformations of eros. Sublimation is more a definition than an explanation. What I believe I know is that Levinas is too insistent on the separation of eros and agape, as though they could never be related lest eros contaminate agape.

As for the "stretching" of the concept of sexuality . . anyone who looks down with contempt upon psychoanalysis from a superior vantage point should remember how closely the enlarged sexuality of psychoanalysis coincides with the Eros of the divine Plato. (Freud, 1962, Preface to 4th edition) One wants to say that the Freudian concept of sublimation shows Levinas to be overly concerned with the province of eros, where it comes from. Not where it comes from, but what eros is capable of doing should be our concern.
