It is likely that the monuments played an important role in the articulation and reproduction of the asymmetric social relations between the nobility and priests on the one hand, and the warriors, commoners and slaves on the other. The megalithic monuments of Malekula were constructed in the context of male initiation rites, controlled by lineage elders. The initiate progresses through a series of grades (the number varies from area to area) starting at adolescence. Each stage involves a payment, made to the elders who control the ritual.
BC (BM-126) East Mediterranean Islands The site of Akrotiri Aetokremnos (Simmons 1991), on Cyprus, has produced a series of early radiocarbon dates, ranging from 10,340 ± 130 bp to 9040 ± 160 bp (this evidence is discussed in more detail in the following chapter). This seems, however, to represent a relatively short-lived occupation, and there is certainly no evidence for continuity between the hunter–gatherer communities represented at Akrotiri, and the Aceramic Neolithic communities represented at Kalavassos-Tenta (Todd 1987), where the radiocarbon dates cluster in the mid-ninth millennium bp.
