Using VoIP technology, the reseller routes the call through the Internet or a private managed IP network to a gateway close to the destination line. The prepaid application uses an IVR to prompt the user for the account number and destination number (not shown here for simplicity) and checks the credit of the prepaid account.

If properly set up, then the public telephony network is bypassed entirely for long-distance connections. Only two local PSTN calls are required, while the long-distance leg is routed over IP. This can result in important savings, but there is one important catch: voice quality. The VoIP gateways used in this scenario must be able to transcode voice from the public telephony network to a packet stream that can be sent over the Internet.
