Before turning to their stories, however, it is first important to set their experience in context by providing a brief account of the history and evolution of the UWW wheelchair-basketball program, which I constructed from the interviews with several of the participants. History and Evolution of the Program The UWW wheelchair-basketball program began with the efforts of John Truesdale, who arrived at the university in 1970 after working for a couple of years in the State of Wisconsin’s Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR).

I think we became better and more disciplined because of that. We didn’t always like it. But I don’t think we would have been as good or as sound in our understanding of the game if he hadn’t been. .
