Collection, SL/BCHS. 30 The 1882 exhibition included a large display of artifacts of the region's past, some contributed by Mercer himself, whose earlier collections of curiosities—bird's eggs, hunting knives, Egyptian costumes—now began to be overshadowed by a rapidly growing collection of historical objects from his home region. Some of his work reflects or parallels that development in American thought, but his interest in the past was so broad and extended to so many periods that it defies easy categorization.

During the period when he had been collecting tools, phasing out of archaeology, and arguing with the leaders of the Historical Society—that is, from the summer of 1897 to the end of 1898—he had also been deeply involved in his first ceramic experiments. His talent as a draughtsman had served him well as an amateur; now it began to serve him professionally.
