7 ★ Plaza de España. The Plaza de España is a legacy of the Franco era, and none the better for it. It is overlooked by dreary office blocks and two dull 1950s skyscrapers, the Edificio España and the Torre de Madrid. The parched and dusty square is redeemed by the fountain, which includes a bronze statue of Cervantes’ great creation Don Quijote, with sidekick Sancho Panza. For a clichéd but fun tourist photo, there’s nowhere better. @ 10 min. 8 ★★★ Museo Cerralbo. Tucked behind the Plaza de España is the spellbinding Cerralbo museum, a wonderfully eclectic and intimate collection of artworks gathered in a charming 19th-century mansion.
30pm. Metro Plaza de España or Ventura Rodríguez. 7 ★★★ = Parque del Oeste. This leafy, green park is a welcome retreat from the searing summer heat. Find a quiet corner under the mature trees and gaze at the distant Sierra de Guadarrama. Younger children enjoy the small play park near the cable-car entrance. The adjacent Paseo Pintor Rosales is lined with cafés, bars, and restaurants where people flock on hot days or nights to enjoy the breezy terraces. The park also boasts a beautiful rose garden, La Rosaleda, with fountains and a sea of multi-colored blooms.
