Von wenigen cm Länge; die gleiche Pflanze variiert außerordentlich bezüglich der Bestachlung je nach Besonnung; besonnte Triebe sind oft enorm bestachelt, während der gleiche Busch auf einer kaum besonnten Seite Triebe macht von wenigen kurzen feineren St. (siehe Foto). Bl. ) Frkn. ; Glochiden fehlen oder sind gering. -R. 1-2 mm hoch, ca 3 mm weit, eine hohle Rinne um die Griffelbasis bildend, mit wenig Nektar, Rö. darüber trichterig, 12-20 mm lang, oben 15-20 mm weit, innen weiß. Stbf. weiß, unterste 3-6 mm lang, oberste 8-10 mm, Insertionen dicht bis zum Saum, Beutel creme bis zitrongelb.

A var. tunicata recedit frutice 1-1,5 m alto, trunco et ramis quotannis membra 4-8-verticillata procreantibus; membris 10-30 cm longis, 2,5-3,5 cm crassis; spinis et vagina albis; floribus 42-70 mm longis; ovario areolis 3 mm longis et semiglochidibus, 10-25 mm longis praedito; camara nectarifera cyathiformi, 4 mm longa, pallida; filamentis deorsum viridulis, sursum rubidis, antheris vitellinis, stylo pallido vel rubribrunneo, stigmatibus 5, flaveoloviridibus, petalis purpureis, 22 mm longis, 16 mm latis, obtusis; fructu sterili, 5 cm longo, 2,5 cm crasso, viridi, circum cyathum purpureo; habitat Choros Bajos, Prov.
Mit kleinen, gering verbreiterten rötlichen Schüppchen und mit aufrechten Bündeln borstenförmiger, heller, noch wachsender Stachelchen. -R. blaß gelb, ca 2 mm hoch, eng um den Gr.. Rö. darüber innen blaß, 12-22 mm lang, trichterig, Stbf. alle ziemlich gleichlang, 7-12 mm, die untersten sehr dünn, weiß, die oberen dick, hellgelb, Beutel hellgelb, Gr. weiß, 2-4 mm dick, oben etwas dünner, Basis sehr dünn, Gr. 18-25 mm lang, wovon 2-3 mm auf die 7-8 hellgelben zusammengeneigten Narbenäste kommen, welche tiefer stehen als die höchsten Beutel.
