In 1958, at the party of the centenary of the Koninklijk Nederlands Gasthuis voor Ooglijders at Utrecht, the Snellen medal was once based by way of the Board of the clinic in reminiscence of PROF. DR. HERMAN SNELLEN SR. This medal can be awarded each one fifth yr to an individual of Dutch nationality, who had enormously distinctive himself within the box of ophthalmology . The Snellen committee, of which I had the glory to be a member, was once unanimous of their number of the laureate of this award; it may be Dr. C.D. BINKHORST for his extraordinary and inventive paintings at the intra ocular implant lens. BINKHORST, an incredibly talented eye-surgeon, begun lens implantation in 1955, after he had studied Ridley's approach in London. "He brought a number of advancements, and in 1957 constructed his iris clip lens, during which fixation of the implant lens was once supplied via the iris diaphragm. The iris clip lens was once in 1965 by way of the iridocapsular lens, meant for extracapsular extractions, whereas the iris clip lens was once compatible for either intra capsular and extracapsular extraction. BINKHORST has earn ed an international attractiveness and ophthalmologists from around the globe come to the little cities of Terneuzen and Sluiskil within the province of Zeeland, to benefit his technique.

Nuclear physics is almost immediately experiencing a thrust in the direction of basic phy sics questions. Low-energy experiments assist in trying out past contemporary stan dard versions of particle physics. the quest for finite neutrino lots and neutrino oscillations, for proton decay, infrequent and forbidden muon and pion de cays, for an electrical dipole second of the neutron denote the various efforts to check contemporary theories of grand unification (GUTs, SUSYs, Superstrings, .

The June, 1971 report was sufficiently encouraging to warrant a resumption of the procedure. However, the following strict guidelines were suggested. It is emphasized that this is a voluntary 33 restriction agreed upon in the Miami community and is not intended to reflect unfavorably on surgical iftdications accepted by ophthalmologists in other communities.

Ridley posterior chamber lens. : Cataract surgery and its complications, St. V. ). optical reasons, the danger of dislocation of the implant w~s always great. Therefore, numerous modifications appeared which utilized the iris as well as the posterior capsule for fixation. The optical portion of the lens is located either in the anterior or posterior chamber. BINKHORST currently utilizes a pseudophakos with 2 posterior loops made of platinum-iridium.

The first stitch is placed corneo-sclerally and the second sclero-corneally. The needle is left in place bridging the half depth section. Virgin silk in lens implantation should only be used as a temporary suture. This material is insufficiently inert and perIon or steel sutures are much more preferable. The excellent mechanical properties of virgin silk however, makes its continued use as a preliminary suture advisable. 52 Fig. 14 Fig. 15 Completmg the corneal section. With the author's special knife the section is carried through into the anterior chamber between the virgin silk sutures.
