This is one of the reasons why this work gives such an impression of pessimism. We too must now consider the factors that hinder an ad­ equate conclusion, always keeping in mind the basic concept I keep stressing—namely, that these are not just specific prob­ lems related to ending analysis; they happen to be more directly noticeable when a project for conclusion is expected but resist­ ance comes to light. Even interminability is a concept that does not just concern the end of analysis; it concerns all those situa­ tions that prevent us from progressing towards the conclusion.

In yet other cases they indicate the situation already described—the re-acquisition of parts of the personality that had been kept hidden up to that moment, or a readjustment to transform the "separation", spurred by the emergency.
