Comparison of the sources of exotic weeds introduced to four continents are based on lists of species in Cronk and Fuller (1995) (black bars) and weed species that are targets for biological control in Julien and Griffiths (1998) (hatched bars). Data for Chile are from Arroyo et al. (2000). Recipient areas and numbers of species are given.

The introduction of non-native species raises the immigration rate and the effects of exotic species may increase the extinction rate, if they harm native species. 10. 36 · Exotic plants in the landscape The Theory of Island Biogeography has been criticized recently (Brown and Lomolino 2000, Heaney 2000, Lomolino 2000), partly because it assumes the existence of equilibrium conditions. In addition, speciation was not initially considered to be a major factor in island biogeography theory because it was assumed to occur over too long a time.

Ten years later this area still retained its interior forest character. Only one introduced plant species, the melastomataceous shrub, Clidemia hirta, had widely invaded the forest, despite there being many thousands of human visitors each year and an extensive network of trails (Turner and Corlett 1996). Clearly, factors other than human visits, such as deliberate dispersal of non-native species or the availability of introduced plants in surrounding areas, can be important. Finally, edge theory predicts that more non-native species will be found near habitat edges.
