After capsizing, the first step of the capsize recovery, or last half of the roll, is to adjust the paddle planing angle. By flipping the wrists back, bringing the knuckles toward the kayaker’s face, the paddle is rotated on its lengthwise axis to bring it from the blade-on-edge position to a planing angle, ready for the 90-degree sweep across the surface, which will be the next step.
