From a skills point of view, there is a high correlation between personal development and career development. For example, acquiring the skills of learning in an individual sense will also have a positive impact on developing learning in a work setting. Similarly, developing skills such as problem solving, decision-making, relationship management and change management will have a beneficial impact in the personal and work context. No matter how many skills we develop, we will never be able to use them effectively, unless we are really motivated.
Figure 12 illustrates that the mechanistic organisation resembled the Bureaucratic type previously identified by Weber in many respects. On the other hand, the organic structure was not only more flexible in design, but also flexible in terms of job specification, work roles, management style and attitudes towards people. Whilst the organic organisation did have levels, these tended to be based not only on seniority, but expertise. Because job roles were not as fixed as in the mechanistic organisation, there was greater mobility within the organic system.
