Was the move to your current premises (right), which combine a workshop with a restaurant, a gallery and a shop, a part of that decision? When we started in 1993 it was already evident that the designer was becoming more important than the producer (take Philippe Starck, for example). We decided to use my name against everything we did and to produce and distribute ourselves. We like to be in control of the whole process from first idea to communication with the consumer. It was difficult at first, but once you develop a way of working it becomes easier.
More importantly the humanist element appealed to me. I wanted to make something as banal as waiting for a bus a pleasurable experience. Every detail counts. I was surprised that I won the competition because it’s not my nature to apply political pressure. My work is either the best or it’s not. I don’t sell myself; my work sells me. There were a lot of practical, as well as health and safety, considerations to take on board and many different bodies to please. It has been a long and difficult process.
