On an ocean chart, the width of the pencil line becomes a significant factor and accurate plotting is impossible. Instead, use a plotting sheet. These can be made up yourself, but they are so cheap to buy that I always kit up with a sheaf before I set sail. So long as a quality eraser and a sharp 2B pencil make up your plotting kit, they are recyclable, so don’t worry about having enough to last the voyage.

If there is nothing, you’ll just have to concentrate harder. Now look towards the horizon in that direction through your pre-set sextant.
