After the spawn, most species move into deeper water and sulk for a time, and then return to the shallows, which are bug and baby fish factories, and again feed heavily. In some lakes, fish can remain in the shallows for months; in others, rising temperatures will drive them and their prey out into cooler, deeper water. The movement of fish in search of cool water means that flyfishing may not be productive at certain times of the day or at certain times of the year. As fall arrives, the water cools again, permitting fish to return to the shallows, where they feed heavily to build up the fat reserves that will take them through the winter.
But there are other types of cover that aren't as permanent as topographic structure and that are just as invisible on a map as light, heat, and wind. One source of cover that changes with time is weed growth. In the early spring, a bay may be comparatively barren. As spring progresses into summer, weed growth often occurs. This has several effects. First, weeds provide shade that can make shallow water, which would otherwise be too warm, acceptable for fish. Second, the weeds provide food for insects and cover for baitfish, again making the area appealing for predatory fish.
