On some issues we are decidedly and incontrovertibly committed to one side. On others we are rather more accommodating. What we have tried to do on all issues is to give a fair hearing to those who do not always share our commitments. In this way we hope to have produced arguments which, in turn, will be given a fair hearing by animal experimenters, hunters, farmers and governmental decision-makers as well as those committed to significant improvements in the lives of the members of the animal realm.
They should not be interpreted as necessarily those of the organizations to which we belong. The issues discussed in this book are the most contentious in animal welfare disputesanimal experimentation, fur-farming and trapping, the use of animals for human entertainment and the conditions under which animals are raised for human consumption. Our conclusions suggest that however necessary cold logic and objective data may be to an impartial consideration of these issues none of them may be resolved by reason and facts alone.
The objection is, and should be, to the idea that animals exist for the sake of humans. Yet this, too, must be understood in the context of other statements.
